It's no secret that I am a dork for Christmas, so I'm taking quick break from my usual posts about film music for a quick bit of seasonal cheer. I apologize in advance if you are a bitter and/or easily offended person.
1. SomaFM. The best, most wackiest Christmas music anywhere is SomaFM's Xmas in Frisco mix. I just finished listening to the tragic and bizarre "Cat Carol" and was definitely enriched by the experience.
2. Magnatune Records. If you desperately need to hear something other than Johnny Mathis at your parents'
place for Christmas Eve dinner this year, Magnatune is giving away an elegantly merry compilation of Christmas music...think cello and acoustic guitar tracks with a few tasteful vocal carols thrown in. 62 minutes of music by more than ten different artists. Listen here or proceed directly to the free album download page.
3. Lagniappe Christmas. This online station based in New Orleans favors highly eclectic but always strongly spiced selections ranging from Bourbon Street style jazz renditions of traditional carols to AC/DC's "I Want a Mistress (For Christmas)." Cheesy yet grand.
4. Slacker.com. If you voluntarily watch American Idol or didn't get to hear Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" enough times during your last mall outing, then Slacker.com's "Holiday Hits" mix is definitely your cup-o-nog.
5. Christmas Remixed. Hiding among the more traditional stations on Live365 is a cosmopolitan little cocktail of downtempo electronic Christmas music that goes by the name of Christmas Remixed. A sleekly urban alternative when you feel festive yet Bing-Crosbied-to-death.
